Mavis Adams Billings, age 81, of Smithfield, KY, passed away Wednesday, November 15, 2017, in Clarksville, TN.

Mavis was born April 5, 1936, in Shelbyville, KY, to the late Joel Adams and Viola Ellis Adams. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Clayton E. Billings; brother, Harold Adams; sisters-in-law, Cornelius and Patsy Adams; son-in-law, Dale Stakelbeck.

Mavis is survived by two daughters, Debbie Wilson of Clarksville, TN and Joyce W. Stakelbeck of Crestwood, KY; three stepsons, Joe (Doris), Ted (Pam), and Roger (Rose) Billings, all of LaGrange, KY; two brothers, Donald (Doris) Adams and Teddy Ray Adams; three grandchildren, three great grandchildren; four sisters-in-law and many nieces and nephews.

Mavis drove for the Red Cross Wheels Program for over 26 years, retiring twice and returning as a substitute driver until April 2015.  Her pride, commitment, and giving of self was an unspoken service to others.  

She also worked as an accountant for the Oldham County water department, Crestwood Fire and Rescue, and secretary for Ballardsville Baptist Church for many years. She was a school bus driver for Oldham County school system and held many offices for the PTA/PTO organizations. She was chaperone and seamstress for the Oldham County bands and choirs. She worked in little league baseball, making the best home-made chili for many of their sporting events. She liked to travel, bowl, sew and embroider, winning many ribbons for her quilting and embroidery work, including a major embroidery piece, ” Indian Chief”, which was donated and on display at General Butler State Park, Carrolton, Ky.

Mavis loved and studied her Choctaw Indian Heritage, helping the Henry County Senior Citizens, taking care of animals and was a huge University of Kentucky basketball fan.

Mavis married Clayton Billings, and would spend 36 years with him. She enjoyed riding in parades with him in old Model T cars and showcasing early John Deere Tractors. Mavis loved feeding the animals, family gatherings, and her life on their farm. Mavis' children view her as their strength and stability in the family.

A Celebration of Life Service will take place Sunday, November 19, at 3:00 PM Eastern Time, with visitation at 10:00 AM until the hour of service, at Heady Radcliffe Funeral Home, 311 W. Jefferson Street, LaGrange, KY, with Rev Wayne Dozier officiating. Burial will follow at Valley Rest Cemetery, in LaGrange.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Mavis’ honor to the Henry Trimble Animal Shelter, 9213 Sulphur Road, Sulphur, KY 40070; or to The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, 3 International Drive, Suite 200, Rye Brook, NY 10573; or to a  charity of choice.
