James “Ed” Maurer, age 74, of Clarksville, TN passed away Monday, July 15, 2019, at his residence.
Born in Augusta, GA on September 19, 1944, he was son of the late James O. Maurer and Frances Sheffield Maurer. A devoted husband, father and friend, Ed will be dearly missed and will never be forgotten. Ed leaves behind to cherish his memory his wife, Virginia “Ginny” Horne Maurer; son, Daniel Sheffield Maurer of Nashville, TN; daughter, Lena Monet Wallace and husband Josh Wallace of Pegram, TN and sister, Martha “Mardi” Burns of Glencoe, MN.
Ed was founder of the Special Needs Law Center, Maurer & Gardner, PLLC, Attorneys at Law. He created this law firm after realizing a need for attention to individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Previously he had served as General Counsel for the Department of Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities and Western Mental Health in TN. This specialization of law took him to every county in TN. He served thousands of individuals and families in the disability community over the past 30+ years. Ed was well known in TN by agencies, families, courts, clerks and justices because of the law he practiced. His partner, Cynthia Gardner, will be carrying on the law firm’s practice.
Ed was a proud US Army veteran of the Vietnam era after graduation from the law school at Ohio Northern.
No public service is planned according to his wishes. There will be a private Celebration of Life for family and friends.
