Virginia Settle

Virginia Johnson Settle, age 85, went to be with her Heavenly Father on Saturday, May 1, 2021 at her daughter and son in laws home after a short battle with esophageal cancer.

She was born in Montgomery County, Tennessee on March 20, 1936 with a foot of snow on the ground.  She was the only child of Jessie Ray Johnson and Wilton Hodges Johnson Baggett.  She lived briefly in Detroit, MI in her early years with her mother and step father Julian Baggett, but they later returned to Clarksville and finished her education at Clarksville High School.  

Virginia met the love of her life and married Clyde Settle July 24, 1952. They were married 60 wonderful years before his passing September 4, 2012. In 1967 Clyde’s work moved them to Hermitage, TN until 1969 when they returned to Clarksville where they began their careers as owner/operators of several Burger Kings in the Clarksville/Hopkinsville area.  In the early years, Virginia worked without pay to help the business survive. For almost 40 years she played a key role in the day to day business.

Before her diagnosis of tuberculosis in December 2019, Virginia loved to travel and was fortunate to see all 50 states. During her life she enjoyed playing golf, going on bus trips, eating out, and staying on the go! In their retirement years she and Clyde would take short day trips around Middle Tennessee to no place in particular. She enjoyed eating breakfast, Monday through Saturday, at Moss’ Southern Cooking (sometimes returning during the day for lunch or dinner).   On Sunday mornings she ate at the Waffle House on Riverside Drive where she more than once returned home saying a “kind stranger” paid for her breakfast.

She is preceded in death by her father (who she lost at the age of five), mother, step father, husband, and devoted dog, Buster. She is survived by her children Russell Settle and Vicki Miller (J.R.). Grandchildren Jason, Mandy, and Lauren Settle, Trae Miller (Sandy). Great grandchildren Lainey Grace Settle, Kaila Woodin, Jackson Whitley and Laurel Miller.

Virginia was a gentle soul with such a giving heart. She was loved and will be missed by many. 

Graveside services will be held Wednesday, May 5, 2021 @ 2:00 PM at Greenwood Cemetery with Rev. Steve Lannom Officiating. Visitation will be Wednesday, May 5, 2021 from 11:00 AM until 1:30 PM at Neal-Tarpley-Parchman Funeral Home.
